UK Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert Roster with An additional 11 Countries
British government has placed an additional eleven new destinations to its travel advisory roster regarding the risks of industrial alcohol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This revised travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "an international surge in the incidence of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol poisoning.
Just recently, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after several serious cases like the deadly demise of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful substance often used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. It is not intended for human consumption.
Although it is generated during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers bring it down to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.
Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and since it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to detect.
Official Guidance for Travellers
Authorities representative a senior official emphasized that each tourist should recognize the symptoms of industrial alcohol poisoning.
"If you're drinking spirits overseas, stick to trusted places and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or free shots," the official advised.
"If something feels off, like a hangover that's way worse than typical or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."
The full register of nations identified as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
