Storm Claudia Impact: Recovery Operations Persist as Arctic Blast Approaches

Emergency crews are still working to address extensive inundation triggered by the recent storm.

A significant emergency was declared in Monmouth, south-east Wales, where residents were rescued or evacuated from waterlogged properties after heavy downpours on Friday.

On Sunday morning, four severe alerts, indicating a danger to life, remained active, alongside 41 flood warnings across England. River levels on the Monnow surpassed previous records, topping levels recorded during previous severe weather events.

Homes, commercial properties, transport networks, and power grids all suffered from significant flooding in parts of Wales, authorities confirmed.

Partially underwater vehicles in flood water in the affected area.
Cars left partly submerged in rising water in the town on the weekend.

Data indicated that around 20 properties in parts of England were flooded due to the severe conditions, including some in the Cumbria region.

As the storm system moves away, a sharp temperature drop is forecast to move across the United Kingdom, bringing freezing temperatures and potential wintry precipitation.

Saturday night, the UK experienced its coldest evening since late March, with temperatures plunging to -7C in a Scottish location.

A temperature drop of around 5C will shift above-average autumn temperatures to lower figures nationwide, with peak temperatures on Sunday reaching around 11 degrees in the southeastern region before becoming colder at the start of the week.

"As the storm retreats, high pressure to the north-west will bring a chilly Arctic air across the country," a weather expert stated. "This will bring significantly chillier conditions than lately, and, while generally drier, there is also a potential of wintry hazards. Widespread frosts are anticipated, with readings falling as low as -7C in certain locations next week, and daytime highs remaining in the single digits."

He added, "Couple this with a brisk northerly wind, and there will be a marked chill factor. This represents a notable change after a prolonged spell of unseasonable warmth."

Health authorities have activated a cold weather alert for parts of the Midlands and northern England from Monday, while environmental agencies have warned that flood risks may continue throughout the coming days.

The low-temperature warning is effective from Monday morning until Friday morning, covering the East Midlands, West Midlands, North East, northwest, and Yorkshire region.
